The Happy Easter Hamper Review (Hotel Chocolat)

The fact I love chocolate is no secret, so when the lovely people at Hotel Chocolat offered to send us their Happy Easter Hamper so I could give it a bit of a review (erm, eat the chocolates), I couldn’t really say no, could I?

Happy Easter Hamper Review

First of all, this selection of Easter chocolates comes in a lovely black box tied with a white ribbon and a ‘to… from…’ tag, so if you wanted to give it as a present just as it is, you could do just that. At £35, it’s not a cheap Easter treat, but it certainly is a thing of beauty.

At the back of the box, you can get some information about the chocolates, which can help if you are avoiding specific ingredients. The Happy Easter hamper is gluten-free and suitable for vegetarians, but it is not suitable for Jumpy as it contains nuts and egg. Luckily, I already have treats lined up for her.

What I love most about the hamper is the fact it contains Easter-themed goodies, but without trying to be too ‘out there’ with weird flavours and combinations. Praline, caramel, truffle… all my favourites. When you buy chocolates from a reputable chocolatier, they sometimes try to be quirky but I think I am quite traditional (boring?) in my choice of chocolates. So far, so good, Happy Easter Hamper!

Talking about weird flavours, the worst possible chocolate flavours I ever tasted were part of an exquisite gift by my nan, from the best chocolatier in town. Because it was all made by an artisan, it didn’t come with a ‘menu,’ so each bite into a new chocolate was a surprise. I was in chocolate heaven, until I bit into a lavender-flavoured chocolate (really?). After I washed my mouth (or something along those lines), I gave a tentative bite into the next chocolate… liquorice. Seriously??? I think I gave the rest of the chocolates to my flatmate. That was 15 years ago. I remember it like it was yesterday…

Digression Mel, digression.

With the Happy Easter Hamper, you will get no such scarring experience. The flavours are ‘safe’ in this box, you would be pleased to know. Here is what it contains:

  • The Egglet H-box

This is the one for grown-ups to hide from the children, with some ‘naughty but nice’ flavours such as Champagne and Rum, but also more conventional beauties like Simple Dark or Salted Caramel Cream.

  • Salted Caramel Puddles

I absolutely love these little babies. The chocolate melts on your tongue, with hints of caramel and a subtle ‘ting’ of sea salt. It is perfect! They make a lovely little gift by themselves, with the pretty ribbon at the top, and that is what we gave our neighbours for Christmas last year.

  • City Bunnies filled with classic molten caramel

The children absolutely loved these last year. You bite into them and a pool of gooey, sticky caramel comes out of the pretty bunny-shaped shell. These were a winner at home!

  • ‘Caught on the Hop’ Slab

The slabs by Hotel Chocolat are always my favourites. They are different and always make such a nice present. This one is no exception, with the bunny’s head poking out of the side, as he is looking for his carrots.

  • Eggs & Soldiers

Now these are my absolute favourites for this year. I think Hotel Chocolat have outdone themselves again. First of all, the box looks modern and child-friendly, which my children will most certainly love. The flavours are also perfectly balanced, and I always find a bit of a white chocolate  shell around praline is just divine. I cannot wait to give these truffle eggs and praline toast slices to my children so they can pretend to “dip dip dip,” as they say when they get eggs and soldiers.

So, what do I think of the Happy Easter Hamper?

I find it elegant, quirky and I love the fact Hotel Chocolat stuck to timeless flavours.

When I was little, my favourite treat in the whole world were the little poules en chocolat we would get from the baker’s at Easter-time (small chocolate hens filled with the most delicious praline you can imagine).
