Hello Fresh Cooking Boxes Combine Convenience & Gastronomy

Our second Hello Fresh cooking box, the classic one for four, was delivered a few minutes before my brother and his other half arrived for a short stay. Timing could not have been better. With a few days of catching up and sightseeing ahead of us, I was not planning to spend all my time on my own in the kitchen. I wanted to make the most of my time with our guests. Hello Fresh was taking the planning out of what we were to eat for three nights, and made mealtimes completely stress-free.

If you have not heard of Hello Fresh yet, where have you been? I have written about the service before, and I absolutely love it! Every week, the people at Hello Fresh devise delicious recipes, set up cooking instructions in step by step cards with photos, do the shopping for you and send you everything you need, all pre-measured. All you have to use from home is salt, pepper, olive oil and butter.

Hello Fresh

You can opt for a classic box, which allows meal swaps, a family box or a vegetarian box. You can get three to five meals, depending on the box you chose. It is a subscription service, but it is really flexible. You can choose to have a box every week, or once in a while.

What I love most about Hello Fresh is the food. I am not normally into surprises, and my cooking is not particularly adventurous, but I have thoroughly enjoyed every Hello Fresh recipe I have tried, despite not choosing the meals myself. The quality of the ingredients is what I noticed immediately upon opening my first box. They are much better than what I would get from my local supermarket. The meat is what I have most been impressed with. It is ethically reared by a family butcher and it is quite simply incredible, and not dissimilar to meat I remember from my childhood in rural France. The vegetables are seasonal, crisp and tasty.

The recipes are quick to put together, healthy and incredibly tasty. Allergens are listed on the website, which make substitutions much easier for our family. Here is what we thought of the three dishes I cooked, as well as details of substitutions I made so that Jumpy could eat the same thing as us despite her allergies.

– Cranberry and Cream Cheese Roulades with Roast Potatoes
The only adjustment needed because of Jumpy’s allergies was flour. I simply replaced it with corn flour. This chicken dish felt festive yet healthy, and fed three adults as well as three hungry children.

– Peppered Pork Fillet with Chorizo and Roasted Sprouts
The pork was stunning and no tweaking was required for Jumpy. All the flavours worked beautifully in this recipe.

Hello Fresh - Peppered Pork Filletwith Chorizo and Roasted Sprouts

– Keema Meatball Curry with Homemade Chapatis
I normally find the smell of lamb being cooked absolutely revolting so it is fair to say I was disappointed to receive a recipe for a lamb curry. I adapted it for me by using the recipe with pieces of chicken breast, and made the lamb meatballs for the rest of my family.

Hello Fresh - Keema Meatball Curry with Homemade Chapatis - Chicken

Surprisingly, I did not find the smell of the lamb overpowering, and I even had a bite of one of the meatballs, which were not too strong. That reinforced my knowledge that Hello Fresh use the highest quality ingredients only. I would never have considered making my own chapattis, and I was pleasantly surprised at how easy they were to make. Jumpy had the same as everyone else, apart from the chapattis.

Hello Fresh - Keema Meatball Curry with Homemade Chapatis

As I was pondering whether the service Hello Fresh provide could be improved in any way, I thought they could have
– a list of steps that can be done ahead.
– a note on the recipe card saying whether the leftovers can be frozen.
– a wine suggestion for each dish.

After we finished eating the three meals in this box, we decided to subscribe. I have ordered my first box for next Monday. After five weeks in France, the little ones and I will be back home at the end of the week. Our routine will resume on Monday. With school runs, clubs, catching up with friends, trying to find some space for new toys, it will be a very welcome parcel indeed. We will not have the boxes every week, but when we have friends visiting, come back from holidays or have a particularly busy week, we will treat ourselves to a box.

Do you fancy a £20 discount?
When I joined Hello Fresh, they sent me a code to share. It will give you a £20 discount on your first box, and I will also get credit on my own account if you subscribe. Do not hesitate to share the code: 3CZAGM.
