The Gastronomic Gift Box: Foodies’ Heaven

When Serenata Flowers asked me whether I wanted to review their services, I had never heard of them so I had a look at their website. My eyes were immediately drawn to the ‘Hampers’ and ‘Chocolates’ tabs. I love flowers, but I prefer food, so I gave the lovely people at Serenata Flowers a list of hampers I would love to receive as a present and asked them to surprise me.

The box was delivered during the Easter week-end, two days only after I was contacted; that is efficient! Getting my gift the day before Easter was ideal as we were having a lazy week-end, and snacks are always welcome in those times.

The parcel was not your usual brown box. It was pretty and had a luxurious feel, with its stripes and beautiful logo. I am a sucker for packaging. I know it should not matter, but if someone has bothered with the way what they send looks; you can guess that what is inside will be even better.

I have to say I was really happy about the contents of the box. I was gifted the Gastronomic Gift Box, and it was perfect! Savoury treats included a Godminster vintage organic cheddar as well as apple, raisin and walnut chutney, along with Godminster digestive biscuits and Japanese rice crackers. As for the sweet goodies; we had Cotswold handmade meringues and milk chocolate peanuts and raisins. There was also a personalised note in the box.

Less than ten minutes after we received the box, I was already putting together a cheese board for us. We had some goat’s cheese, camembert and Boursin at home so it was all perfect to go with the goodies we had been sent. Hubby even opened a good bottle of wine my mum gave him for Christmas. It was seriously good wine. Merci Maman! Little people were keen on the cheese board, too. Beanie is a bit of a goat’s cheese addict. Can you tell?

Although he found the service rather expensive, Hubby was happy with the contents of the box. “That cheese is the best cheese I’ve had in ages. It’s gorgeous, isn’t it?” He added that evening, after we had eaten the entire cheese, that it was probably the best cheddar he had ever eaten. My husband does not take his cheddar lightly, so consider this a really good compliment about the cheese.

I found the digestive biscuits incredible with cheese and chutney. Although raisins never make it on my plate, their texture did not bother me in the chutney. I guess they were blended, so they simply added sweetness to the chutney.

The hamper contained the perfect balance of sweet and savoury treats, with a nice bottle of white Bordeaux Sauvignon. I love French wine, but I always go for a strong red to go with cheese or red meat when I buy Bordeaux wine, so white wine was a nice surprise. The bottle had a cork, not a screw top, which is always good in my books. Hubby is not normally into white wine, but he loved the white Bordeaux with dinner. He found it crisp and light.

I was not sure I would enjoy the wine, but this Sauvignon was seriously great! It complimented our chicken and rice beautifully on Easter Monday, and our vegetarian lasagne on Tuesday. I was glad I had saved half the Japanese crackers as it meant I could have them with a second glass later on whilst watching the TV. Just a small piece of advice: do not have the white wine with cheese; they would not taste nice at all together.
