Autumn Picnic

Every Tuesday since the beginning of term, the girls and I have been going to playgroup straight after taking Crevette to school. As we only have an hour between the end of playgroup in town and the start of pre-school for Beanie, we have been taking a picnic with us every week.

Last Week, it was raining so much on Monday I thought we might have to give our weekly picnic a miss, but I still packed it all anyway. If it ended up being too cold, we would just rush home and lay a blanket on the living room carpet. Did I mention I love picnics?

Autumn Picnic - Picnic Basket
Beanie and I were going to have the mini salmon puffs we had made on Monday, with salad for me. I had made a bacon sandwich with a DS Gluten Free Ciabatta roll and Plamil mayo for Jumpy who cannot have quiche as it contains wheat, dairy and eggs. We could all have potato snacks and we were going to try Vita Coco flavoured water. Dessert would be Petits Filous yoghurts and madeleines for Beanie and I. As for Jumpy, she would try natural yoghurt from the Coconut Collaborative with raspberry jam as well as new ‘free from’ biscuits from Lucy’s and Orgran.

Tuesday was a glorious day! Even though it was windy and rather cool in the shade; it was warm enough in the sun to have our lunch outdoors. Until now, we have been taking our food to the play park near school. Jumpy and I normally have our lunch on a bench whilst Beanie runs around and plays with other children, eating very little in the process.

Autumn Picnic - Vitamin D

I decided to do things differently this week. I laid our waterproof picnic blanket on the grass and the girls boosted their vitamin D intake with ten minutes of sunbathing.

Autumn Picnic - Our Picnic

As they were relaxing in the sun, I got the food out and we took our time to eat and simply enjoy being together in the autumn sun. We are always running from one place to the other and I really enjoyed our very relaxed half hour in the sun. Our local park was the perfect spot!

Autumn Picnic - Apple & Blackcurrant Vita Coco

The girls ate all their lunch and loved their new Vita Coco drinks. When she first tried the mango and pineapple water, Beanie grimaced and gave it to her sister, who drank it in under a minute, asking for more straight after she handed me the empty carton. Beanie then moved on to the apple and blackcurrant flavour and she loved it!

Autumn Picnic - Yoghurt & Raspberry Jam

After that, the girls ran around collecting conkers and playing football with an inflatable ball as I sat there watching them. Bliss! It was then time to walk to nursery.

Autumn Picnic - Kicking a Ball

This is my entry for the #vitapicnics competition. We were sent the picnic basket I used in the pictures as well as four cartons of Vita Coco flavoured water in two flavours, a blanket, an inflatable ball and a Frisbee. No payment was received for this post. All opinions and photos are my own.

Oui, tu as l’oeil! Je l’ai eue en cadeau en faisant mes courses il y a au moins deux ans. Elle ne quitte pas la poussette. Aucune excuse de ne pas pique niquer!

It seems a perfect afternoon for a picnic! Such a nice idea!
It feels a little cold to have picnics here now, but maybe I just need to be a bit more imaginative and have a picnic indoors too! x

    • 15/10/2014 / 10:46 pm

It is not that cold around here, but it has been way too wet for picnics this week.

Lovely photos – to bright and crisp. Makes me feel like you live in a different country to me. All I’ve seen is rain 🙁 We love a good picnic too and you’ve reminded me that even if the weather is crap, an indoor carpet picnic is a great substitute. Thank you again for your thoughtfulness today x

No worries. Such a great new venture! We have had nothing but rain since the day after our little picnic (last Tuesday). Jumping in puddles rocks though!

Ah, what a lovely sounding time you had! The pictures are beautiful as always. You are such a cool relaxed mummy and I love reading what you have been up to x

      We did!

    • 22/10/2014 / 11:32 am

We have not had much sun since then!

  7. What a lovely picnic. I tried to do a living room picnic last week but the kids didn’t understand. My daughter sat next to the blanket and my son went underneath. haha #sharewithme

    • 22/10/2014 / 9:31 pm

Ha ha, bless them! My kids tend not to stick to the blanket either. They usually walk around with their food. You could have had a picnic in a pretend den with your little man!

Thanks! I have to admit the past 2 Tuesdays have been too wet for our weekly picnic but I am hoping for brighter days after half term.

      Thanks, Sian!

Gorgeous post Mel, and fab photos as always! I love a picnic too, they’re essential with small kids and when the sun is shining, well why the devil not? I took my 5yo to a playgroup just after 2yo was born and another mum had the same double buggy with two older kids in it. She looked longingly at my newborn, and said ‘I already miss those cocoon days’. Seeing your little Wriggly in hers has just reminded me of that and made me smile xx #brilliantblogposts

PS – best of luck with the competition 🙂

    • 24/10/2014 / 5:44 pm

She is seriously outgrowing the cocoon already. They grow up so quickly! xxx

      • 26/10/2014 / 7:12 am

My 2yo was in it until about 4m but my boy hated it and only went in it a few times… it goes too fast xxx

I am from a tropical country and coconut is staple drink. You dont even need to bring it. Its just anywhere. A guy with a rolling cart full of green young coconut and he will open it in front of you! Refreshing! This picnic of yours reminded me of that =) #brillblogposts

I am glad my little post reminded you of home!

We love a picnic and had one by the sea only a few weekends ago when the weather was sunny-I think it’s fine as long as there’s no wind-my hair and eyelashes hate wind! ha! Such a gorgeous post and we adore Vita Coco here too! Thanks for linking up to #brilliantblogposts

    • 26/10/2014 / 10:10 pm

I would also be deterred by wind or rain!

  17. 27/10/2014 / 1:30 pm

Oh Mel, that’s so adorable. The photo of them all sunbathing <3 Best of luck with the comp and I'm off to check out these vitacoco drinks! xx

    • 28/10/2014 / 9:58 pm

Thanks Georgina. Today was a sunbathing kind of day, too! I love Autumn that feels like Summer. x

  18. 29/10/2014 / 10:10 pm

You pack a good picnic Mel! Who doesn’t love a good picnic? My girls and I love them, even if it’s a blanket picnic at home. Great photos of your autumnal park lunch.

Good luck with the competition xxx

    • 30/10/2014 / 4:09 pm

Thanks Heledd! The weather has been so nice this week I am thinking about having a picnic again soon. x

  19. 12/11/2014 / 2:11 pm

OOOOh, I love picnics! I would have wimped out and had a carpet picnic, but this looks so much better. I love autumn too. Just add some extra layers and get on with it–love that attitude. 🙂

    • 12/11/2014 / 2:53 pm

We had another picnic on Tuesday, and it was coooold! The good thing about that is it gives you a really good excuse to have hot chocolate as soon as you get home.

      • 12/11/2014 / 3:02 pm

I think that’s why I love autumn so much. Getting in from the cold and eating and drinking warm yumminess 🙂

        • 12/11/2014 / 3:44 pm

          Great minds think alike!
