When we were invited to the film Première of Sing, I had not yet heard about the animation but I had high hopes as it was made by the creators of Despicable Me and Minions. I checked the trailer and it looked rather funny.
If you have not seen it, let me warn you: this trailer is addictive; my children keep watching it back to back, and I keep telling them to put it louder so I can sing along. Yes, that bad!
Three of my children and I headed to Leicester Square on a cold Sunday morning to meet my friend Vanessa and her girls. The children were treated to drinks, face painting, biscuit decorating, a photo in a giant snowball as well as a dance floor and there were hot drinks for the adults, thank goodness!
The minute the film started, everyone in the audience was engrossed. There was not a peep from anyone throughout the screening, although the cinema was three-quarters full with young children.
The animation is set in a world entirely populated by animals, in the same vein as Zootopia, with a feel of X-Factor to it. The story is gripping from the start: an underdog impresario, Buster the koala, stages a singing competition as a last attempt to save his theatre.
I can honestly say that this is the kind of kids’ movies adults can go and see without children in tow and thoroughly enjoy it. It has the right balance of humour, friendship, popular songs everyone knows and loves. The music was chosen well to please both children and adults, from hit of the 1980s to Lady Gaga. The cast is impressive, with Matthew McConaughey, Reese Witherspoon, Taron Egerton, Jennifer Saunders and newcomerer Tori Kelly.
Catchy tunes, tears, heartbreaks, father-son relationships, fart jokes, miscommunication, teenage girl problems, overworked mothers and chase scenes: it is all in Sing!
Have you seen it yet? What did you think?
