Our Smooze Summer

My little man and I stumbled upon the Smooze stand as we were leaving the Allergy & Free From Show last month. If you follow me, you might have noticed the photo of Crevette holding his fruit ice outside Kensington Olympia as we were about to jump on our train. It was quite simply delicious!

What is it?
Smooze is just like ice cream without the cream. It is made using pure fruit juices, fruit purees and coconut milk. It tastes amazingly creamy and it is good for you. What more could you wish for?

With all her allergies, Jumpy had never had ‘real’ ice cream before. All she had tried was frozen smoothies. The prospect of my little girl trying ice cream got me all hyper!

Smooze comes in a funky shaped carton and we found the size of these frozen treats to be perfect.

A real ‘free from’ treat
Smooze fruit ice is free from preservatives, artificial additives, colours or flavours, dairy, cholesterol and gluten. It is Halal and Kosher certified. To me, it is the ultimate frozen treat.

If you are health-conscious or on an exclusion diet, you can still enjoy a frozen treat that is creamy whilst being lower in fat and generally healthier than dairy-based traditional ice cream.

The range
Smooze is available in four different flavours, all of which we were sent to try, to the children’s delight. They all have the creamy texture of the coconut milk and are not overly sweet. The flavour of the coconut is not overpowering and the fruity varieties really taste like fruit.

Smooze Flavours

Mango & Coconut is creamy and tasty. We all love it, especially my older two.

Pink Guava & Coconut it is my least favourite of the four flavours but it was a hit with Jumpy. Seeing my baby enjoy a ‘real’ ice cream for the first time was such a big moment!

Pineapple & Coconut is incredibly refreshing and I particularly love it.

Simply Coconut is scrumptious! It is the creamiest of the four and we all love it, even though I would never have chosen coconut as an ice cream flavour before.

Storing is convenient since Smooze has a long shelf life at room temperature. We have a tiny freezer and I like the fact we can store them in a cupboard until we are ready to freeze them. We can then restock our freezer when we are running low, without a trip to the shops.

You can freeze as many or as few as you need and they are ready after about fifteen hours in the freezer. Now we have tried them, we always make sure every spare space in our freezer is filled with Smooze!

Our advice
You really have to make sure you shake them well before you freeze them, otherwise you will not get a creamy texture, especially the pineapple and coconut ones.

I find them easier to open with scissors. We have done it without, but it is a tad fiddly.

Jumpy is only 20 months old and her limited fine motor skills mean she struggles to keep her fruit ice up. I have to push it up for her every couple of minutes as it does not stay up. I am sure she will learn soon!

I would rather my children had Smooze than regular ice cream.

The children and I love them and we will definitely buy them again!

Because I’m physically incapable of actually buying anything healthy, which is why I’m fat.
