Just before half term, my little man’s headteacher gave all the children in the school a challenge: create their own recipe and write it up for her, with a photo. As a parent, I am not a fan of homework. Homework for the children is also homework for the parents, right? This time round though, I was delighted about the assignment my 9-year-old was given. If they are to become confident in the kitchen, children need to practise, experiment and learn to enjoy cooking.
Our absolute favourite thing as a treat is a homemade milkshake. I’d say we have milkshakes once a week, and we certainly offer a milkshake to all our guests when we have a party at home or host a play date. It’s our ‘thing’ in a way.
Our favourite milkshake at the moment is the humble Oreo milkshake (‘humble’ because it is so nice and easy to make), with a one-word instruction (blend!) and three ingredients only: 1 cup of milk, 1 scoop of vanilla ice cream and 2 of the iconic black and white cookies. Yes, that simple! Now you won’t believe how good it is until you’ve tried it. Go on, you know you want to!
I do love Oreo biscuits, Oreo Thins and Oreo Minis… nothing beats these babies dunked in tea! You know what? I’m not alone! Did you know that Oreo was the world’s favourite biscuit? Here are a couple of ice breakers if you’re ever stuck with strangers at a party:
- Over 7.5 billion Oreo biscuits are eaten every year,
- In the past couple of years, Oreo have been teasing our taste buds with the launch of several wonderfilled new flavours like Peanut Butter, Strawberry Cheesecake, Mint, and more recently the Choc’o Brownie flavour.
The quirky people at Oreo challenged me to come up with a recipe that would match my own personality. The four Oreo Flavours have their own personalities too: Choc’o Brownie flavour Oreo is smooth, the Mint one is cool, Peanut Butter flavour Oreo is nutty and Strawberry Cheesecake favour Oreo is fruity. Since I’d be supervising my little man’s recipe creation, I begged him to decide I was cool and therefore needed the Mint-flavoured Oreo biscuits in the mix, but according to him, I’m a bit nutty (in a very positive way apparently, erm…), so we went for the scrummy Peanut Butter Flavour Oreo as the basis for our recipe. We’ve used these babies in a recipe before: check it here.
It had to be a milkshake of some sort. There was no questioning this. Although I’m not one for a fad, we decided to go for a Freakshake recipe.
Freakshakes always have whipped cream over the milkshake bit, so we decided to stir in a little smooth peanut butter into our cream (would be crazy not to!).
We chose not to make our treats too freakishly over-the-top or sickly-sweet. Because bananas and peanut butter are a match made in heaven, we topped our Freakshakes with a reasonable half a Peanut Butter Flavour Oreo, our unsweetened peanut butter whipped cream, a drizzle of honey and a few banana slices. Voilà! You could add some cocoa powder too on top if you wanted to.
Without further ado, here is Crevette’s recipe, approved by me (and the rest of the family).
Peanut Butter Oreo Freakshakes
Ingredients
- 100 ml full fat double cream
- 2 heaped tablespoons unsweetened smooth peanut butter
- 2 cups of milk
- 2 scoops vanilla ice cream
- 4 Peanut Butter Flavour Oreo biscuits
- 1/2 a ripe banana sliced
- Optional: Runny honey & cocoa powder
Instructions
- Before you get the ingredients out, place your whisk, bowl and two cups in the freezer. Cold utensils will help when whipping the cream, and the ice-cold cups will keep the Freakshakes nice and cool.
- In the cold bowl, whisk the cream until it thickens. Stir in a tablespoon of peanut butter and whisk until soft peaks appear. Transfer to a piping bag and keep aside for later.
- Place the milk, ice cream, remaining peanut butter and 3 Peanut Butter Flavour Oreo biscuits in a food processor. Blend until smooth.
- Transfer the milkshakes to the cold cups, top with peanut butter whipped cream, drizzle a little honey and sprinkle some coco powder (if using). Decorate with banana slices and half a Peanut Butter Flavour Oreo biscuit. Serve with a spoon and a straw. Enjoy!
