The Last Feed

Goodbye breastfeeding, goodbye my friend…

I have finally done it. I have given Wriggly that last taste of breastmilk.

She has had her last feed. To be honest, I doubt there was much milk left for her to enjoy, but there you go. She is 19 months old and until a few weeks ago, she was showing no signs of giving up those night feeds. She would even attempt squeezing in a feed or two during the day.

I loved breastfeeding my babies but by the time she had her last feed, I was ready. Wriggly was not as willing to stop as I was but such is life. The fact of the matter is I think the milk had gone and she was suckling for comfort more than anything else.

As I was giving Wriggly that very last feed just over a week ago, I knew it would be my last time nursing my baby. She still loves to cuddle in the middle of the night, head between my breasts, seeking comfort and reassurance. She can have that.

Goodbye breastfeeding, goodbye my friend…

Moving from breast to bottle has been a rocky road for Wriggly and I, as I wrote before. Because she was drinking so little formula until recently, I would get the smallest and cheapest ready-made cartons I could get, no matter which brand they were. Each carton would last a couple of days.

In the past four or five weeks, Wriggly has had one bottle just before bed as well as a bottle in the middle of the night most nights. Over the last week, she has also had a bottle just before her nap. We are definitely ready to move from ready-made formula to powder, which is a lot more economical.

Coincidentally, we were asked by HiPP Organic whether we wanted to try their follow on milk, which uses “only the finest organic ingredients.” I know our little girl could be on full fat milk by now, but she does not like it, so formula it is at the moment. What keeps her happy makes me happy! Follow on milks  complement little ones’ diets. The follow on milk by HiPP is also higher in iron and vitamin D than standard infant formulas, which helps protect my little girl against becoming vitamin D deficient. Win, win!

Here is a bit more information from HiPP:

“HiPP Organic Follow-on-Milk includes the essential ingredients your baby needs including iron for cognitive development, vitamins A, C and D for the immune system and  PRÆBIOTIK® a source of allgosaccharldes.

HiPP Organic follow-on-milk is an ideal complement to the weaning diet from 6 months onwards when moving from breast or infant milk feeding.

HiPP Organic reusable milk storage box has a build in scoop holder in the lid and a scoop leveller inside.

HiPP Organic has been researching breastmilk for over 50 years, you can rely on HiPP Organic to include the ingredients your baby needs to grow strong and healthy.”

We received a box of Combiotic follow milk with a milk storage tin. Not only is the formula organic, but the packaging is also more environmentally friendly than others since the milk storage box is reusable, with sachets of formula that slot in nicely. Each foil bag contains 400g of formula, which means there is less risk of throwing away some of the powdered milk after the recommended three weeks than we might with a 900g box.

Milks Disclaimer:

The Department of Health recommends that you breastfeed your baby exclusively for the first six months of their life; at around six months you can start to wean them on to solids and start to combine breastfeeding with bottle feeding. HiPP Organic understands that all babies are different and some mums might want to transfer to bottle feeding earlier than others. HiPP Organic would always advise that you speak to your midwife or health visitor before changing your feeding method. For more information on milks, please visit the HiPP Organic Website.

My daughter is 1 in a couple of weeks and we’ve tried cows milk in her cereal and she isn’t keen at all so we’re going to stick with formula just now so this would be great. Love the reusable box too
